Psalm 136 opens like a song. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. In this psalm that last line comes back again and again, like a chorus everyone sings together. His love endures forever means God's love does not run out. It keeps going, like a song that does not stop.
Dinesh's warm soup did not make his hard recess go away. The day was still the day. But the bowl in his hands helped him notice something good while the hard thing was still there. That is what thanksgiving is like. We thank God because he is good, not because everything went perfectly. The psalm gives one big reason to sing: his love lasts forever.
You can start small. Tonight, before bed, say thank you to God for three things. Say them out loud.

Dinesh set his school bag down and sat at the kitchen table. His grandmother Lakshmi ladled hot rasam into his bowl and set it in front of him. Steam curled up. He wrapped both hands around the warm bowl.
"How was school?" she asked.
Dinesh thought about the game at recess. He had been picked last again. The word bad was almost out of his mouth. Then he felt the heat in his palms and smelled the pepper and tomato.
"The soup is hot," he said. "That is one. Emma shared her eraser. That is two."
He looked at his rubber-band ball beside his bowl, orange and lumpy. "My ball came back to me. Three."
Lakshmi laughed and ladled him more. Dinesh ate slowly and counted the three on his fingers again.
