Two Are Better Than One

God made us to help each other up

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

— Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV)

Wisdom on companionship

Today's Story

✍️Fictitious Story
Mateo stood at the edge of the void deck. His toy bus sat in his hand, and Lucas was not there. Lucas had moved away last week. The other children raced their buses along the curb, but Mateo did not know any of them. His shoelace came undone, and he bent down to fix it. Then a boy sat on the bench nearby, holding a red bus and looking at the ground. Mateo's stomach felt tight. He wanted to say something. The words stuck. He thought about the verse his mother read at breakfast. Two are better than one. He stood up, walked over, and said, "Hello. I am Mateo. Do you want to play?" The boy smiled. His name was Wei. They raced their buses along the curb until it was time to go home. Mateo's shoelace came undone again, and Wei waited for him. Then they walked to the lift together.

Reflection

In Ecclesiastes, the wise writer says something simple. Two people are better than one. When one person falls down, the other can help them up. But a person who falls alone has no one to help. This is not just about helping. It is also about not being alone. God made people to be with other people. When you say hello to someone new, you are doing what this verse says. You are becoming a helper. And you are finding a friend who can help you too. Sometimes it feels scary to speak first. Your tummy feels tight. But you do not have to be brave all by yourself. God is with you, and He made us to reach out to each other. A smile and a kind word are small things, but they can start something big. Today, say hello to someone new. Ask, "Do you want to play?" You might help them up. They might help you up too.

Think About It

• Is there someone near you today who looks alone?
• What can you say to them to start a friendship?

Prayer

God, You are the God who made us for each other. You have not left me alone, and You will not leave me alone. When I feel shy, help me speak. Give me courage to say hello, and to help someone up today. I believe You are with me. Amen.

Live It Out

Say hello to someone new today and ask, "Do you want to play?"
