Dinesh Devan was adding one last panel to the comic in his workbook margin. The little hero was just about to fly.
Then Priya called from the hallway. Dinner was on the table. Wash your hands, please.
Dinesh wanted to finish the line first. He looked at the page. He looked at the door. "Okay!" he said, and capped his pencil. He washed his hands and sat down while the food was still warm.
Afterwards he took the workbook back out. The comic was not finished, and that was fine. Nobody had been cross. Nobody had raised a voice. He had simply come when he was called, and the evening felt easy.
Kavya was already at the table when he arrived, and Lakshmi had saved him a little extra.
