Today's Story

✍️Fictitious Story
Salty gravy still clung to her tongue when Mum called from the kitchen. Kavya had kept her baptism towel folded beneath the mat for a week, because the faint ring on the cloth marked the day the water touched her forehead. Each evening she smoothed it flat, and each morning she hid it again. She checked it before school too. Tonight Mum stood in the doorway holding the basin and said the towel needed washing. Kavya's fingers closed over the cloth and would not open. Then she carried it to the sink and laid it under the tap, because Mum was still standing there with her hand out. Mum squeezed the soap and turned the water warm. The tap ticked while it warmed. "The day is in you, not in the cloth," she said. Kavya watched the suds rise and slide away, and she leaned her shoulder against Mum's arm until the last grey swirl went down the drain.

Reflection

Exodus 20:12 says, "Honor your father and your mother." Honoring can sound like a big, heavy word. Most days it looks small. When Mum asked for the towel, honoring her meant letting go of her own plan and moving her feet toward the sink. Kavya wanted to keep the cloth exactly as it was, so she held on. Then Mum spoke, and Kavya listened. Listening is one clear way a child honors a parent, because it says, "Your voice matters to me." This shows up in ordinary moments. When Mum calls you to wash your hands, or Dad says it is time to sleep, answering "Yes!" right away keeps you near them. God gave you a mum and dad as your first home of love, and trusting them is one small way of trusting the One who gave them to you.

Think About It

• What is one thing your mum or dad asks you to do that is hard to stop playing for?

• When you hear their voice today, what will your feet do first?

Prayer

God, I don't always want to stop when Mum calls. Sometimes I want five more minutes, and my feet stay put. Help me hear her voice and say yes quickly. I believe You put her there to love me. I trust You today. Amen.

Live It Out

When someone asks you to do something today, say "Yes!" and do it right away.
